How to Protect Your Floors from Colder Weather

How to Protect Your Floors from Colder Weather

With temperatures steadily dropping and cold weather right around the corner, it’s important to take proactive measures that will protect your floors from dirt, slush and foot traffic.

Carpet — Carpet undergoes general wear and tear throughout the year, but heavy winter boots only speed up the process. To prevent stains, be sure to have your family and guests remove their shoes before walking on carpet. You can also place entry mats at each door to collect excess dirt, snow, slush and grime.

Hardwood — Hardwood flooring expands and contracts when temperatures change. During colder seasons, you may see cracks between planks — but don’t fret! This is normal. Maintaining a steady internal temperature between 60-70º well keep your floors looking nice. You can also have your hardwood refinished to extend their lifespan.

Tile — All types of tile are very durable, but it’s still a good idea to clean grout and natural crevices. You should also never let melted snow or water sit too long on your tile flooring. Be sure to use a cleaner that is made specifically for your type of tile flooring.

Vinyl — Compared to other types of flooring, vinyl is extremely durable. No matter how much mud, snow or dirt is tracked throughout your home these next few months, your vinyl floors should hold up just fine. We still encourage you to clean your floors regularly since dirt and debris will have nowhere to go.
